1933-36 HEDDON #900 "Musky Special" 5-1/2' Split Bamboo
Bidding has ended |
Up for auction an Extremely Nice 1933-1936 HEDDON NO.900 "MUSKY SPECIAL" 5-1/2 FT., 2-PIECE SPLIT BAMBOO BAIT CASTING ROD WITH THE ORIGINAL BAG & ALUMINUM TUBE. First introduced by Heddon as the #9 "Musky" in 1917 and redesignated the #900 "Musky Special" in 1933, it went on to sell as a regular member of Heddon's rod line into the early 1950's. Because this example has the reel seat that is simply stamped "PATENTED" and because Heddon's Cleo Hanley has handwritten "Heddon" diagonally on the rodshaft, along with "#900" just above the winding check, we know this was built from 1933 to 1936. After 1936, the reel seats were only marked "PAT.". This heavily constructed Classic Era rod, built on a No.4 ferrule, is incredibly powerful for its size. Equipped with full agate guides and tip top, screw-locking "Hold-Tite" reel seat and elongated solid cork tournament grip and foregrip. I've included a photo of the original listing from Heddon's 1936 catalog. Rod is in Very Fine++ condition, showing only very light wear and is about as nice as you'll find. Bamboo is absolutely PERFECT, arrow-straight, with no splits, cracks or delamination whatsoever. Both rod sections are the correct length. Varnish looks brand new, and likely is. All wraps are solid and complete, with intermediates the length of the rod. All guides, tip top, ferrules and winding check are EXCELLENT. Chromed nickel-silver reel seat works perfectly, showing little wear. Solid cork tournament grip and elongated foregrip are very nice, with the grip having one moderate flat spot on the knob, about the only blemish on this whole rod. This rod has seen little action and is one of the nicest Heddon Musky rods I've ever handled. The original bag is about Fine to Very Fine, showing some soiling and one minor hole on the flap. Carries the correct, earlier embroidered Heddon leaping bass label on the flap. The aluminum tube is also Very Fine, with only very minor dents and light scratching. Polished cap screws on tightly and securely. A beautiful early package from James Heddon's Sons, original and complete. To be sold with a very modest starting bid and NO RESERVE. Buyer to pay $12.00 for bullet-proof, professional shipping via U.S. Priority Mail. Insurance is optional. Payment must be received within 10 days of auction closure. I accept PayPal, Money Orders and Cashier's Checks. Check out my other vintage tackle auctions and thanks for looking.
