This is a very nice 2 7/8 inch HARDY PERFECT REEL.

It is a quality right hand wind reel in perfect mechanical condition. All original with no cracks in the frame, winding plate or the spool. The foot is grooved and made from brass and it is complete.

The action on the reel is incredibly smooth with a crisp two tone sound. There is absolutly no wobble or free play anywhere on the reel.

This is a rare vintage gold 5500 High Speed fishing reel. It is in excellent working condition, very smooth. This reel is in great shape only shows a very small amont of wear from use, as seen in the pictures, but there is a little discoloration on the handle sideplate. It looks like this reel has been used very little. The foot is dimpled and I think the number is 770200 ( the second didgit I beleive is a 7). This reel would make an excellent addition to your collectiion.

As you know Howells rod are becoming quite a collector’s piece.

This is one of his early custom bamboo fly rods after he left the RL Winston Co. It is Serial Number #4048 which is the 48th rod made in 1974 at age 40, which many collectors believe Gary was in his prime of his fly rod building career. Martin Keane, the author of Classic Rods & Rod Makers owns what he considers his most cherished Howells fly rod; Serial Number #4040, so this classic is the 8th rod made after his.

This 8 ½ ft. 4oz. 2-tip 2pc hollow fluted rod cast like a jewel. It is unique in that some of you may have noticed in the photographs that it has the gold tipping as seen on Gary’s early fly rods compared to the yellow tipping used on his later rods, as well as the fine threaded reel seat with the slip and locking ring. This one also has intermediate wraps in-between all of the snake guides, and it’s the only one I know of in existence on a Howells rods. You can see the intermediate wrap example on the tips photo. It’s only been lawn cast and has never seen water. It cast a 5wt double taper line with ease and precision, especially for those who love to make delicate short or long cast with long leaders. Out of all the bamboo fly rods that I have own, this one is truly finesse. There are no flaws in this fly-rod, comes with the original tube and cloth. MODEL 504 TOBIQUE & RESTIGOUCHE

Many anglers had requested a multiplying reel but an improvement over the Griswold and the Col. Thompson. Work started on a new design in 1926 and the reel was introduced in 1928. This was, like the Restigouche, for salmon and grilse fishing but unlike the 423 was a multiplying reel. The appearance was so much like the Restigouche that I am convinced that the company even used the same illustration for both reels. The company claimed that this was the world’s first multiplying reel with the handle mounted in the center of the reel. The handle revolved in a handle guard similar to the 19th. Century trolling reels with the anti-foul fittings.

This guard was made by extending the German Silver binding. The reel was available in five size’s 1/0, 2/0, 3/0, 4/0 and 6/0. It multiplied at a ratio of 2 1/8 to 1 and was fitted with rolling bars both, front and back, to eliminate line stripping. The reel was designed to be fished under the rod and consequently the spool revolved in the same direction as the handle. For those anglers who wished to use the reel on top of the rod when playing a fish, they could supply a reel where the spool would revolve in the opposite direction. This was built to order only.

Although the company claimed this reel was unique with its center winding multiplying action and they were the inventors, I am not so sure. I am certain that if this was a strong claim then a patent would have been applied for, preventing other manufacturers from making similar reels.

Edward vom Hofe, Heddon, Zwarg Reels

In the late 1890's and early 1900's, one of the finest large saltwater and Salmon reel makers known was Edward vom Hofe of NY. These handmade reels are mostly for saltwater use and shown below is a full range of the sizes and styles he made from the 1-0 to 12-0. The reels are made of German silver and a hard rubber side plate. The Salmon reels are marked "Griswold".

Otto Zwarg worked for vom Hofe and later started his own company, making an equally fine handmade saltwater and Salmon reel.

This reel has a 5:1 gear ratio, & ball bearing for smooth operation. The spool has push button release, an approximate line capacity of 330 yds. 4 lb test, 220 yds. 8 lb test & 165 yds. 10 lb test monofilament line. The spool has the red plastic line reducer that is easily removed & it still has the original felt dust band. You are bidding on a vintage Shakespeare Aluminum Revolution collectible fishing lure. The lure is not painted, the finish is aluminum metal. The front body section is 2" long, the rear body section is 7/8" long. The body measures 3/4" diameter at the widest point. The hardware is in good condition, it has two side mounted treble hooks, and one tail mounted treble hook. All the side hooks appear rust free, the tail hook has minimal rust. The front has a line pull centered on the nose. There are two propellers mounted between the body sections, each pitched to rotate in opposite directions. The front propeller is 1-1/2" across, the rear propeller is 1-3/4" across and is marked on one side with "WM. SHAKESPEARE JR., KALAMAZOO, MICH.", and is marked on the other blade of the propeller with "PATENTED FEB. 5, 1901, APR. 9, 1901". It is in very good to excellent condition overall. It measures about 4-1/2" long including hardware. I have no way of dating it other than patent date. It weighs 0.7 ounces. With packaging it will ship at 6 ounces. Heddon Deluxe Bamboo #135 Fly Rod. This is a 7 1/2 foot rod that is virtually immaculate. It looks like it has never been fished! It is a 3 piece rod with an extra tip (4 pieces total) I am not an expert on vintage rods, but it looks like a hardwood / silver nickel reel seat. All wraps are tight and all pieces straight. Finish is exceptional. I do not know exactly how old the rod is, it literally looks as if it has never been fished. It is hard to see even fingerprints on the cork handle. This is a great pair of reels and they come with one orginal box. The box I would consider to be in fair to good condition for the age.
