It's my pleasure to offer at auction an Extremely Nice and Quite Scarce 1919-1923 HEDDON NO.10 5 FT., 2-PIECE SPLIT BAMBOO BAIT CASTING ROD WITH CLOTH BAG. The higher-grade No.10 was a charter member of Heddon's rod line, first introduced in 1909 as "The Dowagiac $10.00 Rod". It would go through several name changes, starting with the "Wonder" in 1928, "Irvin Cobb's Choice" in 1930 and finally redesignated the No.1000 "Premier" in 1933. Because this example has the single tip section, carries the early "Heddon's Dowagiac Pat. Dec. 1. '08" rod & reel logo stamping on the reel seat and is equipped with the Heddon locking reel band, we know it was built from 1919 to 1923. Because of the closeness of the windings, I actually think this was built in 1919 or 1920. Like earlier rods built around the turn-of-the-century, the No.10 was all about cosmetics, a fact that would eventually lead to its demise. With heavily engraved & knurled hardware and almost gaudily wrapped with no less than 120 silk windings the length of the two sections, it looked like a rod from the late 19th century. But by the end of 1933, with the country mired in the Depression and fishermen now only willing to pay for more practical features in a bait casting rod, the No.10 was discontinued from Heddon's rod line. Also comes equipped with full agate guides & tip top, about a 60% complete "Dowagiac" Bass rodshaft decal and solid cork grip & foregrip made of delicate 1/16" cork rings. I've added a photo of the original listing from Heddon's 1922 catalog. Rod is in Very Fine+ condition, showing only very light wear for these and is about as nice as can be found. Bamboo is perfect, with no splits, cracks or delamination whatsoever. Both sections are the correct length, with the tip having only a very faint set. Varnish is pristine and appears to be a rather new overcoat. All silk windings in three colors are solid and complete. All guides, tip top, ferrules, winding check and buttcap are excellent. Ferrules separate with a nice "pop". Reel seat locks perfectly, showing little wear and bold stamping. Solid cork grip and foregrip show only moderate wear. This rod simply has not seen a whole lot of action and would be very tough to upgrade. Put up in a non-original cloth bag that is included for purposes of shipping and storage. The bag is in excellent condition, with no holes or tears whatsoever. A very Scarce, early model from James Heddon's Sons that is seldom offered for sale. To be sold in true auction format, with a very modest starting bid and NO RESERVE. Buyer to pay $13.00 for bullet-proof, professional shipping via U.S. Priority Mail. Insurance is optional. Payment must be received within 7 days of auction closure. Thanks for your time and good luck.
