Up for auction is this wonderful handmade eel spearing gig.came out of a farm in New Jersey in the Delaware River Valley . I am not an expert in these kinds of implements but my understanding is that it was made in or around the later part of the the 19th century the spear head and pole measures 21 feet 6 inches, the head measures 13-1/2 inchs long and 9-1/2 inches wide. The barbs are in good condition they look like you could go out today and use it ,but don`t this is very old . I had to cut the pole in half which leaves me with two poles --- I used a fine toothed blade with the idea that I could reattach the halfs with a solid wood peg or use a metal railbolt (its like a screw on both ends) most eel gigs are just sold head only i like to see someone use it for display ,it is something to see when they are in full form.Oh yea the pole is cedar can`t emagin it being made out of oak .I will just ship the head if you would like thats why I will leave shipping up to the buyer ----. one more detail the pole has a dia.of 1-3/4 inches at the base of the head an 1/2 inch dia. at the other end.-------------------- you can see in the third picture how long this is, cut in half leaning up agents my shop
