Orvis’ Very Rare Bamboo Classic: The “Mighty Mite”

The Orvis Mighty Mite is One of The Very Finest Bamboo Fly Rods Ever Made and Very Seldom Seen Anymore! This one is a little 2/1 (2 pcs, one tip, originally they were 2/2), 5 Foot, 5 Weight (HEG) that is only 1-1/2 Ounces. Which makes it Perfect for Spring Creek Trout Fishing next year! Although I don’t do much fishing anymore, according to Orvis it has surprizing power to be so small and compact. Besides, according to everyone I spoke to, its a blast to fish with. While it’s original weight was graded for 5 lines back then, I’m sure it will cast a 4, and maybe even a 3 in todays versions. As I remember this little bamboo wonder came out in the mid to late ’60s and it has been a beloved classic ever since. As a mater of fact, Orvis now makes a Reproduction “Mighty Mite” like this little beauty that sells for $3,500. You can see for yourself at Orvis.com. But evenso, the Master Bamboo Rod Builder I spoke to at the factory tells me that they’re no longer able to build rods in this rich, dark bamboo like this one anymore. Reason being, the EPA now requires Orvis to use electric furnaces for tempering, unlike the fire harding process done back then. He added that he still has a ‘very limited supply’ of the older, darker bamboos set asided, and used only for just such classics as this one.

Wright & McGill Bamboo Granger Victory fishing rod 7030 Includes two tips, sock and original tube.

I am proud to offer this wonderful Wright and McGill 7ft, 3oz Granger Victory bamboo fly rod. This rod comes with two tips, and all sections are straight and this rod is ready to go. Ferrules fit nicely and all eyelets are in original working order. This is a two piece rod with two tips, both of which fit perfectly. This is the third and final of these rods that I am offering. The rod appears to have had very little use (check the cork), but when I received it there was a split in one section of the bamboo as shown in the ninth picture. After months of research I found a shop that had the skill, experience and patience to repair this rod and make it like new. The shop is/was South Creek Limited in Colorado. They checked the rod from top to bottom and made the repair and took the weeks required to cure the repair just as when this rod was crafted in the 1940’s. When I spoke to them, I could hear the reverence they had for this particular rod and the care they took made the high cost of the repair justified. If you look at my final pciture, you see the repaired section. I wanted the rod repaired in such a way that it would fish as if it were new, and the repair had to blend into the existing excellent condition rod. They said one of the tips was original and the other appeared to be a Wright and McGill replacement tip.

This rod has the rich caramel color that resulted from the unique tempering process that gives these rods both their legendary action and their beautiful, timeless appearance. This is your chance to get this much sought after rod. You decide if you take it to the river, or put in on the wall.

The cardboard tube is original does show some normal wear, but is in pretty good conditon. The label on the tube has some water stains that I tried to capture in the pictures. The canvas bag is included and looks like it was made yesterday. This rod is in great condition. You will be proud to fish with this piece of art, or you can display it and see the envy in your friends eyes.

It’s my pleasure to offer at auction an Extremely Nice and Quite Scarce 1919-1923 HEDDON NO.10 5 FT., 2-PIECE SPLIT BAMBOO BAIT CASTING ROD WITH CLOTH BAG. The higher-grade No.10 was a charter member of Heddon’s rod line, first introduced in 1909 as “The Dowagiac $10.00 Rod”. It would go through several name changes, starting with the “Wonder” in 1928, “Irvin Cobb’s Choice” in 1930 and finally redesignated the No.1000 “Premier” in 1933. Because this example has the single tip section, carries the early “Heddon’s Dowagiac Pat. Dec. 1. ‘08″ rod & reel logo stamping on the reel seat and is equipped with the Heddon locking reel band, we know it was built from 1919 to 1923. Because of the closeness of the windings, I actually think this was built in 1919 or 1920. Like earlier rods built around the turn-of-the-century, the No.10 was all about cosmetics, a fact that would eventually lead to its demise. With heavily engraved & knurled hardware and almost gaudily wrapped with no less than 120 silk windings the length of the two sections, it looked like a rod from the late 19th century. But by the end of 1933, with the country mired in the Depression and fishermen now only willing to pay for more practical features in a bait casting rod, the No.10 was discontinued from Heddon’s rod line. Also comes equipped with full agate guides & tip top, about a 60% complete “Dowagiac” Bass rodshaft decal and solid cork grip & foregrip made of delicate 1/16″ cork rings. I’ve added a photo of the original listing from Heddon’s 1922 catalog. Rod is in Very Fine+ condition, showing only very light wear for these and is about as nice as can be found. Bamboo is perfect, with no splits, cracks or delamination whatsoever. Both sections are the correct length, with the tip having only a very faint set. Varnish is pristine and appears to be a rather new overcoat. All silk windings in three colors are solid and complete. All guides, tip top, ferrules, winding check and buttcap are excellent. Ferrules separate with a nice “pop”. Reel seat locks perfectly, showing little wear and bold stamping. Solid cork grip and foregrip show only moderate wear. This rod simply has not seen a whole lot of action and would be very tough to upgrade. Put up in a non-original cloth bag that is included for purposes of shipping and storage. The bag is in excellent condition, with no holes or tears whatsoever. A very Scarce, early model from James Heddon’s Sons that is seldom offered for sale. To be sold in true auction format, with a very modest starting bid and NO RESERVE. Buyer to pay $13.00 for bullet-proof, professional shipping via U.S. Priority Mail. Insurance is optional. Payment must be received within 7 days of auction closure. Thanks for your time and good luck.

Vintage Orvis Flea Bamboo Fly Rod
Offered is this vintage Orvis Flea impregnated bamboo fly rod HFG (4) serial #65303, length 6 1/2 ft, 2 piece, weight 2 oz, with its original cloth bag and original metal screw top case with green exterior label. The case says 1 tip, yet two tips are included. Both are Orvis impregnated bamboo tips and are different lengths. One tip is hand numbered #65303 is 39.5″ and the other #56785 is 26.5″ long. The #56785 tip is a tiny bit smaller in circumference and is a little loose when connected to the bottom half of the rod. Perhaps it is for another rod? The tips and the rod are in very good condition. The finish does not show wear and the guides are intact, strong and true. There is some slight darkening to the cork handle from use and some chipping to the edges of the end of the cork handle. The Orvis lable on the metal rod case has a few scratches and the rod case has a slight dent near the bottom. Please see more photos below. A wonderful piece of craftsmanship and a great rod!
