Hardy Palakona The Fairy Bamboo Fly Rod 8 1/2 Ft. Nice!
Bidding has ended |
Here is an 8 1/2 foot 3/2 Hardy bamboo fly rod, marked "Palakona Regd. Trade Mark" and "The Fairy" on the shaft above the grip. Also stamped with "Made by Hardy's England" on the uplocking butt cap, with a serial number of E78148, which dates the rod circa 1951. All four sections are original full length, with both tips being 1 inch shorter than the butt and mid as made. The original varnish is showing it's age with some checking, mainly on the butt section. Some of the intermediate wraps are fraying. Retains all of it's original bridge guides and a white agate stripping guide and tip-tops, with no cracks (one of the tip tops shows a bit of dirt in the closeup photo).
The rod is nearly straight with one of the tips set slightly to the left. Ferrules are tight to the cane and fit snugly, disjointing with a nice pop. This rod has a brisk medium fast dry fly action, weighing 5.3 ounces on my digital scale but feeling lighter in the hand. Comes with the original bag with a few rips in the top, and an elegant Clear Creek satin aluminum tube with brass caps.
According to A.J. Campbell in Classic and Antique Fly Fishing Tackle: "The Halford Special was popular in the United States, as were the revamped Deluxe and the Fairy. The latter rod became famous after Ernest Hemingway fished an 8 1/2 foot, 5 ounce model in Wyoming. Hemingway's Fairy is now in the American Museum of Fly Fishing." A very fine, all original fly rod to collect or use!
