Hardy Palakona The Fairy Bamboo Fly Rod 8 1/2 Ft. Nice!

Thursday, September 11th, 2008
or20080911a.jpg Hardy Palakona The Fairy Bamboo Fly Rod 8 1/2 Ft. Nice!

Bidding has ended

Here is an 8 1/2 foot 3/2 Hardy bamboo fly rod, marked "Palakona Regd. Trade Mark" and "The Fairy" on the shaft above the grip. Also stamped with "Made by Hardy's England" on the uplocking butt cap, with a serial number of E78148, which dates the rod circa 1951. All four sections are original full length, with both tips being 1 inch shorter than the butt and mid as made. The original varnish is showing it's age with some checking, mainly on the butt section. Some of the intermediate wraps are fraying. Retains all of it's original bridge guides and a white agate stripping guide and tip-tops, with no cracks (one of the tip tops shows a bit of dirt in the closeup photo).

The rod is nearly straight with one of the tips set slightly to the left. Ferrules are tight to the cane and fit snugly, disjointing with a nice pop. This rod has a brisk medium fast dry fly action, weighing 5.3 ounces on my digital scale but feeling lighter in the hand. Comes with the original bag with a few rips in the top, and an elegant Clear Creek satin aluminum tube with brass caps.

According to A.J. Campbell in Classic and Antique Fly Fishing Tackle: "The Halford Special was popular in the United States, as were the revamped Deluxe and the Fairy. The latter rod became famous after Ernest Hemingway fished an 8 1/2 foot, 5 ounce model in Wyoming. Hemingway's Fairy is now in the American Museum of Fly Fishing." A very fine, all original fly rod to collect or use!

Extremely RARE* 1927-29 HEDDON #42 6′ 2″ Split Bamboo

or20080907b.jpg Extremely RARE* 1927-29 HEDDON #42 6' 2" Split Bamboo

Bidding has ended

It's my pleasure to offer at auction an Exceedingly Rare and Historically Important 1927-1929 HEDDON NO.42 6 FT., 2 IN. ONE-PIECE SPLIT BAMBOO "LIGHT TACKLE" SALT WATER ROD WITH DETACHABLE HANDLE. These earliest of Heddon salt water models are simply never seen, as very few were initially produced and fewer yet have survived. The first of it's kind I've ever seen. This rod is historically significant, as it represents James Heddon's Sons' first entry into the lucrative salt water rod market. One of three First Series models, the other two being the heavier No.40 and No.44, the No.42 was first offered in 1927 and would sell continuously, in one form or another, up until WWII. Because this example has the rattan-wound grip and foregrip, we know it was buillt from 1927 to 1929. After 1929, the No.42 came equipped with solid walnut grip, with either a foregrip on the butt section or none at all. Made from Heddon's highest-quality Tempered Tonkin cane and equipped with full agate guides & tip top, black & red silk windings, closely wound with no less than 46 intermediates the length of the rod, "Hold-Tite" screw-locking reel seat and rattan-wrapped grip & foregrip(which is on the tip section). Detachable handle measures 14", while the tip section is the standard 5 ft. Rodshaft carries the "Heddon" bass decal, while the reel seat is stamped with the correct "HEDDON'S MADE IN U.S.A. PATENTED". I've added a photo of the original listing from Heddon's 1927 catalog. This beauty is in Very Fine+ to Extra Fine condition, the finest you're likely to see. Shows only extremely light wear and evidence of use. Luckily, it appears it was never used in salt water, as there is absolutely no corrosion to the hardware, which looks as pristine as the day it was built. Bamboo is Perfect, with no splits, cracks or delamination whatsoever. Tip section does show a moderate set. Appears to have been revarnished and partially rewrapped. Guide, intermediate and signature wraps are all solid & complete. Bass decal is about 90% complete. All guides, tip top, ferrule, wound-over winding check and buttcap are Excellent. Reel seat adjusts perfectly, showing virtually no wear. The original rattan on both the grip and foregrip are in absolutely Pristine condition. An extremely rare and beautiful example of these elusive models and one that would enhance even the most advanced Heddon bamboo collection. To be offered in true auction format, with a very modest starting bid and NO RESERVE. Buyer to pay $14.00 for bullet-proof, professional shipping via U.S. Priority Mail. Insurance is optional. Payment must be received within 10 days of auction closure. I accept PayPal, Money Orders and Cashier's Checks. Thank you for your time and good luck. (more...)

Bidding has ended

This auction was on last week - unfortunately someone in Germany thought it would be to their advantage to end my auction early and try and reap the benefits. That has since been fixed with E-Bay and the offender is being tracked.

So again: Here is your chance to pick up this extremely hard to find rod that is a MUST HAVE for any collector. This rod is in MINT condition - not even a flake of varnish is missing. The rod reads: Garrison NE 209 E O -79 -2 and on the tip it reads 0 -79 -2. The female ferrule has a stamp - Super Z. All 7 eyelets on the tip are nice and tight as well as the tip itself. The Butt section has 3 eyelets, all tight and the hook keeper is tight as well. The ferrules are tight with no cracks. The cork handle is in E+ condition. The rod looks to never have been used and was stored in what appears to be a safe environment. I do not possess the additional tip, tube or bag - the auction is for the original rod only. Shipping will be $14.95. Please e-mail me with any questions that you have through the E-Bay account only. All others will not be answered. Thanks and GOOD LUCK! (more...)

Heddon #20 Bamboo Fly Rod

Here's a well used but well cared for Heddon fly rod. Oh the storys it might tell if it could only talk, alright enought of that. Heddon #20 8' 6" its not on there but I'll bet its a 2F all guides, wraps, ferrules, reel seat and cork there and in good condition. Has rod bag and case, I think orginal, also in good condition.

This is a nice fly rod to collect or fish, I think the latter, its good to go right out of the box! All sections are straight and full lenght 34 3/4" no cracks or splits. Rod has a wonderfull action I have not fished it but have lawn cast and it loves a DT 5 F, I tried a 6 but it seemed a bit much. This is a great trout rod you will not be dissapointed.

*SCARCE* 1916 HEDDON #4 5-1/2′, 2/2 Split Bamboo Bait

Friday, August 22nd, 2008
or20080822b.jpg *SCARCE* 1916 HEDDON #4 5-1/2', 2/2 Split Bamboo Bait

Bidding has ended

It's my pleasure to offer at auction an Extremely Nice and Very Scarce 1916 HEDDON NO.4 5-1/2 FT., 2/2 SPLIT BAMBOO BAIT CASTING ROD WITH CLOTH BAG. First offered by Heddon in 1910, the No.4 was completely redesigned in 1916 to include a cork foregrip with the straight handle, a design that would last until 1929. It would go on to sell, by then known as the "Chieftan", through 1952, an incredible 42-year run. Because this example is equipped with first agate guides, agate tip tops and all-metal second guides, we know it could only have been built in 1916. That was the only year the No.4, with the extra tip section, had that particular guide configeration. I've included a photo of the original listing from page 9 of Heddon's 1916 catalog. This model comes equipped with extra tip section, genuine agate guides & tip tops, silk windings, knurled hardware throughout, solid cork grip & foregrip made of delicate 1/16" cork rings, reel seat with Heddon locking band and attatched trigger and "Dowagiac" Bass rodshaft decal. Reel seat carries the early stamped "HEDDON'S DOWAGIAC - Pat. Dec 1, '08" rod & reel logo. Rod is in Very Fine++ condition, showing only light wear for this early model. Certainly one of the nicer No.4 models from this early period that I've handled. Bamboo is Perfect, with no splits, cracks or delamination whatsoever. All sections are the correct length, with one tip section having only a very faint set. Varnish is just starting to show some crazing, but remains very nice. All silk wraps are solid & complete and rod has no doubt been at least partially rewrapped at some point, though done to original wrap specs. The Bass decal is over 95% complete, with colors still fresh and bright. All guides, tip tops, ferrules, winding check and buttcap are excellent. Reel seat works perfectly, showing little wear for these. Solid cork grip and foregrip are in pristine condition. Put up in 3-sectioned cloth bag, which is also in Very Fine+ condition, with no holes or tears whatsoever. The No.4 was never offered with a tube. A very lovely and scarce, one-year model from James Heddon's Sons. These WWI-era rods from Heddon are showing up less and less frequently, especially in this nice of condition. To be sold in true auction format, with a very modest starting bid and NO RESERVE. Buyer to pay $12.00 for bullet-proof, professional shipping via U.S. Priority Mail. Insurance is optional. Payment must be received within 10 days of auction closure. I accept PayPal, Money Orders and Cashier's Checks. Thanks for your time and good luck. (more...)

Saturday, August 16th, 2008
or20080816c.jpg 1946-50 SOUTH BEND #47 9', 3/2 Split Bamboo Fly Rod

Bidding has ended

Up for auction an Extremely Nice 1946-1950 SOUTH BEND NO.47 9 FT., 3/2 SPLIT BAMBOO FLY ROD WITH THE ORIGINAL LABELED BAG & TUBE. The No.47, first offered in the 1930's, was one of South Bend's highest-grade Single Built fly rod models and was rated for Bass & Steelhead. Because this example carries the rectangular "South Bend - Famous For Fishing" rodshaft decal, we know it was built right after WWII until about 1950. Rodshaft is stamped "47 - 9'" on one flat and "HCH or C" on another. The latter is the old line weight designation, equivalent to today's modern 6 or 7 wt. lines. Comes equipped with adjustable screw-locking reel seat, red & black jasper silk windings, solid cork "Comficient" grip and extra tip section. I've included a photo of an earlier, original listing for the No.47 from South Bends's 1941 catalog. Rod is in solid Very Fine condition, showing only moderate wear and is one of the nicest of these models I've handled. Bamboo is perfect, with no splits, cracks or delamination whatsoever. All four sections are the correct equal length and are virtually straight. Appears to have an overcoat of varnish, which remains extremely nice. Rodshaft markings and decal are pristine. All guides, tip tops, winding check, hookkeeper and ferrules are excellent. Ferrules fit tightly, separating with a nice "pop". Wraps remain solid and complete. Reel seat adjusts perfectly, showing only minimal wear. The solid cork "Comficient" grip looks and feels barely used. Put up in the original, correctly marked South Bend bag, which is in Extra Fine condition. Label is fresh and bright, the bag without any holes or tears whatsoever. All this comes in the original fiber tube, which is in Fine to Very Fine condition. Shows numerous rubs, scratches and some fading, but is solid and complete, with absolutely no dents. Cap screws on tightly and securely. Still carries a virtually complete "Fish And Feel Fit" South Bend paper label, which is also correctly marked for the rod. A very Choice post-war package from the South Bend Bait Co., all original and complete. To be sold with a very modest starting bid and NO RESERVE. Buyer to pay $13.00 for bullet-proof, professional shipping via U.S. Priority Mail. Insurance is optional. Payment must be received within 10 days of auction closure. I accept PayPal, Money Orders and Cashier's Checks. Check out my other vintage tackle auctions and thanks for looking.

or20080811d.jpg 1936-1938 HEDDON #200 "Reliable" 5-1/2' Split Bamboo

Bidding has ended

Up for auction a Very Nice 1936-1938 HEDDON NO.200 "RELIABLE" 5-1/2 FT., 2-PIECE SPLIT BAMBOO BAIT CASTING ROD WITH CLOTH BAG. First offered by Heddon as the No.1-1/2 in 1913 and redesignated the No.200 in 1933, the "Reliable" would go on to sell off and on through the 1952 season. Because this example is equipped with three guides on the tip section & has the reel seat stamped with the simple "PAT." marking(both first appearing in 1936) and has the Classic Era rodshaft markings(last appearing in 1938), we know this was built from 1936 to 1938. Heddon's Cleo Hanley has handwritten "Heddon" diagonally across three flats and "#200" on one flat, just above the winding check. This model comes equipped with full agate guides & tip top, screw-locking "Hold-Tite" reel seat with attached trigger, silk wraps of orange tipped in black and solid cork tournament grip & foregrip. I've included a photo of the original listing from page 25 of Heddon's 1936 catalog. Rod is in about Very Fine condition, showing significant use, but remaining in excellent shape. Bamboo is very nice, with no splits, cracks or delamination whatsoever. There are numerous nicks and scratches to the original varnish, but that too remains nice. Both sections are the correct length, with the tip section having only a faint set. Original silk wraps are solid and complete. All guides, tip top, ferrules and winding check are excellent. Reel seat works perfectly. Solid cork tournament grip and foregrip look hardly used. This is a great example of a rod that has seen plenty of action, yet has been meticuously maintained. Put up in a non-original two-sectioned cloth bag, which is included for purposes of shipping and storage. The bag is in Extra Fine condition, with no holes or tears whatsoever. The No.200 was never offered with a tube. A very choice, early example of this popular baitcaster from James Heddon's Sons. To be sold with a very modest starting bid and NO RESERVE. Buyer to pay $12.00 for bullet-proof, professional shipping via U.S. Priority Mail. Insurance is optional. Payment must be received within 10 days of auction closure. Bidding has ended

It's my pleasure to offer at auction an absolutely Spectacular 1960 SHAKESPEARE NO.1465 "WONDEROD" 6-1/2 FT., 2-PIECE FIBERGLASS SPINNING ROD WITH THE SCARCE "GREEN" BLANK & ORIGINAL BAG AND MARKED TUBE. This comes from a group of Wonderods I'll be selling that are, without question, among the finest I've ever seen. The No.1465 was first offered by the Shakespeare Co. in early 1958. This example carries the date code EAL, which indicates it was built in November of 1960. Rodshaft is marked "No.1465 - 6' 6" - EAL", along with a perfect Shakespeare Wonderod oval/ribbon decal. One of the sliding rings on the handle is stamped "Shakespeare" in script. Rod comes equipped with the Scarcer green colored rod blanks, solid cork grip w/sliding bands, plastic winding check & buttcap and beautiful windings of forest green. Because the terms "Mint" and "Near Mint" are so carelessly used on eBay, I tend not to use them, even if it might apply to an item I'm selling. However, in this case I have no choice, as this example is nothing less than solid Near Mint. This rod has never been used and has barely been handled. Other than some insignificant yellowing to the thread preserver, it's as pristine as the day it was made. Green "spiral" rod blanks appear untouched. All guides, tip top, ferrules, winding check and buttcap are perfect. Guide, ferrule and signature wraps are like new. The solid "suberet" cork grip/reel seat has never had a reel mounted on it. Put up in the original blue bag and plastic tube, both of which are extremely nice. The red end caps for the tube are both embossed with "WONDEROD Patented, SHAKESPEARE CO. - U.S.A.". A Spectacular 48 year-old package from Shakespeare, original & complete, and one that would be virtually impossible to upgrade. To be sold in true auction format, with a very modest starting bid and NO RESERVE. Buyer to pay $11.00 for bullet-proof, professional shipping via U.S. Priority Mail. Insurance is optional. Payment must be received within 10 days of auction closure. I accept PayPal, Money Orders and Cashier's Checks. Thanks for your time and good luck.

This auction is for a very rare and highly collectible Payne Parabolic bamboo fly rod in excellent restored condition. This 7 ft 9 inch long, two piece, two tip, 6 sided, bamboo fly rod is in excellent condition. The restoration job is professionally done - looks like the work of Bob Summer's but cannot confirm. This fly rod is the seldom seen parabolic model with an even more unusual wood seat spacer instead of the generally standard cork seat. This is apparently how the first ones were made. Rod is a two piece with two tips - all sections complete, full length and ready to fish. This is a fantastic Payne fly rod - and a superb collectible. Vintage split cane fly rod with replacement sock in excellent condition and includes an accurate (correct hardware and tube material) yet also replacement tube as well. Tube is labeled PAYNE Parabolic 7' 9" #4. Personally find it to be an unusual and most exceptional 4 wt fly rod for sure. Beautiful cane in excellent condition with no issues or repairs. Brown wraps tipped yellow with red at the grip and male ferrules. All wraps are in excellent condition as are each of the guides - agate stripper guide looks to be original. Eden bamboo fly rod by Bernard Ramanauskus model 8315

or20080709a.jpg Eden bamboo fly rod by Bernard Ramanauskus model 8315

Bidding has ended

This masterpiece is in MINT original condition. Check out the pictures. All of the EDEN cane rods built by Bernard Ramanauskus are node less construction. That means all of the weak bamboo nodes are removed by a process of scarfing out the nodes, thus replacing the weak nodes with 18% more solid bamboo power fibers. The results are nothing short of amazing! Since rods made without nodes are inherently faster and stronger than their conventional counterparts, Eden cane rods developed their own proprietary tapers to take advantage of the node less contruction techniques.

This particular rod is a dry fly taper. It has a swelled butt which gives it an enormous power reserve and can easily flick out a little midge w/a few feet of line out or punch size 4 stone fly while facing a strong head wind. This is a rod built for long casts and big flies. It is not a streamer rod. It is a medium fast actioned rod with a tendency towards the faster side. Bernard rates this cane rod for a 5DTor a 6DT, depending on your personal preference. If you are familiar with the Dickerson family of rods, this one feels eerily similar to an 8014 stretched out to 8'3".

All tips are intact and this rod has NO ISSUES whatsoever. No blind wraps. No short tips. No clicking ferrules. No splits or delams. The silk wraps are in perfect condition as are the guides. The rod is 100% original and in MINT condition. What more can I say? This is just a fantastic rod. Good luck. (more...)

Here is one beautiful little Leonard bamboo rod. This rod may have only been fished several times. The rod is in perfect condition. The cork handle is not even soiled. As seen in the pictures the original owner scribed his name on the wooden real seat with an electric pencil, this is very minor and on the surface only.

New in 1976.

Bag and aluminum tube is all original. (more...)

8′ PHILLIPSON PACEMAKER Bamboo Fly Rod – NICE!!

Bidding has ended

This is a Phillipson Pacemaker cane fly rod for a 5-Weight Line. It's a hard-to-find 8-footer, and actually measures a bit less than that when put together. All the wraps and hardware are original and tight. I bought the rod recently for a specific fishing trip to try the taper and measure it up for duplication. Casts like a dream and, though I didn't try it, would probably work with a DT4 because it feels and looks lighter than others I've handled. All the piece are full length. It may have had a light varnish overcoat by the previous owner, but I'm not sure. The rod bag is original I am told, but the tube is a replacement. One tip has a slight set. The reel seat has a couple of dings. The grip is soiled from honest use. Conservative reserve. (more...)

*SUPERB* 1939-48 HEDDON #551 “Stalwart” 5-1/2′ Split

or20060702b.jpg *SUPERB* 1939-48 HEDDON #551 "Stalwart" 5-1/2' Split

Bidding has ended

It's my pleasure to offer at auction an absolutely Superb 1939-1948 HEDDON NO.551 "STALWART" 5-1/2 FT., ONE-PIECE SPLIT BAMBOO CASTING ROD WITH DETACHABLE OFFSET HANDLE & ORIGINAL LABELED CASE AND TUBE. First offered by Heddon in late 1938, the #551 Stalwart sold right up until the Korean War Trade Embargo in 1952, which effectively put an end to all bamboo rod production for James Heddon's Sons. Because of the rodshaft markings, we know this to be a Neo Classic Era model that was built from 1939 to 1948. Heddon's Cleo Hanley has handwritten "Heddon" diagonally across three flats and "#551 - 5-1/2 - L" on one other. The "L" stands for Light action. Also on the rodshaft is the decal of the retailer, "Kerr's Of Beverly Hills", a prominent gun & tackle dealer until the 1970's. Reel seat is correctly stamped "Heddon Pal" and carries the four 1934 Patent numbers granted to Heddon for the handle design. I've included a photo of the original listing from page 33 of Heddon's 1939 catalog. Rod is equipped with "Browntone" Tonkin cane, beautifully swelled butt, Carboloy guides & tip top, maroon silk wraps tipped in orange, detachable offset handle and solid cork tournament grip & foregrip. Rod is in solid Extra Fine original condition, showing virtually no wear. It is among the the nicest of one-piece Heddon casting rods that I've ever handled. Bamboo is Perfect, with no splits, cracks or delamination whatsoever. Tip section is the correct length and shows only a very faint set. All guides, tip top, wraps, ferrules and buttcap are Excellent. The reel seat adjusts perfectly and draws the tip section in tightly & securely. Solid cork tournament grip and foregrip look virtually brand new. A beautiful example that has seen little action and would be almost impossible to upgrade. The original leatherette case w/tube is in about Fine+ condition, showing light overall wear and minor cracking, but no holes or tears whatsoever. Still carries the white Heddon Inspection label, which is correctly marked for the rod. A Superb, original package from Heddon and one that seldom comes up for sale. To be sold in true auction format, with a very modest starting bid and NO RESERVE. Buyer to pay $13.00 for bullet-proof, professional shipping via U.S. Priority Mail. Insurance is optional. Payment must be received within 10 days of auction closure. I accept PayPal, Money Orders and Cashier's Checks. Thanks for your time and good luck (more...)
