1933-36 HEDDON #900 “Musky Special” 5-1/2′ Split Bamboo

or20080618c.jpg 1933-36 HEDDON #900 "Musky Special" 5-1/2' Split Bamboo

Bidding has ended

Up for auction an Extremely Nice 1933-1936 HEDDON NO.900 "MUSKY SPECIAL" 5-1/2 FT., 2-PIECE SPLIT BAMBOO BAIT CASTING ROD WITH THE ORIGINAL BAG & ALUMINUM TUBE. First introduced by Heddon as the #9 "Musky" in 1917 and redesignated the #900 "Musky Special" in 1933, it went on to sell as a regular member of Heddon's rod line into the early 1950's. Because this example has the reel seat that is simply stamped "PATENTED" and because Heddon's Cleo Hanley has handwritten "Heddon" diagonally on the rodshaft, along with "#900" just above the winding check, we know this was built from 1933 to 1936. After 1936, the reel seats were only marked "PAT.". This heavily constructed Classic Era rod, built on a No.4 ferrule, is incredibly powerful for its size. Equipped with full agate guides and tip top, screw-locking "Hold-Tite" reel seat and elongated solid cork tournament grip and foregrip. I've included a photo of the original listing from Heddon's 1936 catalog. Rod is in Very Fine++ condition, showing only very light wear and is about as nice as you'll find. Bamboo is absolutely PERFECT, arrow-straight, with no splits, cracks or delamination whatsoever. Both rod sections are the correct length. Varnish looks brand new, and likely is. All wraps are solid and complete, with intermediates the length of the rod. All guides, tip top, ferrules and winding check are EXCELLENT. Chromed nickel-silver reel seat works perfectly, showing little wear. Solid cork tournament grip and elongated foregrip are very nice, with the grip having one moderate flat spot on the knob, about the only blemish on this whole rod. This rod has seen little action and is one of the nicest Heddon Musky rods I've ever handled. The original bag is about Fine to Very Fine, showing some soiling and one minor hole on the flap. Carries the correct, earlier embroidered Heddon leaping bass label on the flap. The aluminum tube is also Very Fine, with only very minor dents and light scratching. Polished cap screws on tightly and securely. A beautiful early package from James Heddon's Sons, original and complete. To be sold with a very modest starting bid and NO RESERVE. Buyer to pay $12.00 for bullet-proof, professional shipping via U.S. Priority Mail. Insurance is optional. Payment must be received within 10 days of auction closure. I accept PayPal, Money Orders and Cashier's Checks. Check out my other vintage tackle auctions and thanks for looking. (more...)

EX RARE MORTISED 3pc SPLIT BAMBOO FLY ROD J.R Bolton

or20080606c.jpg EX RARE MORTISED 3pc SPLIT BAMBOO FLY ROD J.R Bolton

Bidding has ended

On offer today is a superb rod!!!

Mortised Bamboo fly rod 3pc with spare tip. Approx 11ft

Sadly, I'll never have time to finish it. So its has to go.

Its a very ,very ,very rare Mortised Split Bamboo fly rod. It has a swelled butt which is mortised with greenheart, this was the peek of a rodmakers art. It has a thick pigskin handle and german silver fittings. (reel seat and ferrules). It is made by an England maker J.R Bolton Newcastle upon tyne. There is little information on this rdomaker, like most pre 1900 makers. But to produce a rod of this qauality back in the latw 1800's was truly special. Most were crude greeheart rod. Bamboo was only affordable for the rich gent. It has very unusual ferrules, which have a locking mechansim which I have never seen on any other rod. (see pictures). I had fuly re-whipped varnished the butt section in 1/2 intermediates using pearsalls gossamer and all the other rod makers tricks. But I havent had time to finish and therefore am deciding to sell. It has a little damage to ferrules, a spigot of the spare tip is broken and the serrations on the ferrules are borken on some too. its over 100 years old though....what can you expect. The pigskin handle is in super condition, when have you ever seen a pigskin handle on a rod? Me,never! This a work of art and deserving of a loving buyer and would look nice, if it were to be copied and re-made new by a rodmaker. It comes in its original bag. Which is Velvet lined! Luxury! Luckily the rod has all its original snake eyes too. And it has became de-laminated on the cane. None of the tips are snapped either, all original lengths.

NOTE: These rods (Mortised) are SUPER,SUPER rare. And very desirable! It will be started at £100 starting which is a total bargain! When done, these fetch 500-600 pounds! Perfect for a rodmakers project, and to design a copy upon. I know you rodmakers go mad for these rods! (more...)

Jim Payne Model 104 Bamboo Fly Rod

Bidding has ended

Up for your consideration is this 8 1/2 foot, 2 piece, 2 tip bamboo fly rod made by Jim Payne and sold through Abercrombie and Fitch. On the label on the tube it is written in pencil #104. All sections are full length, the grip is in great shape, the bluing is very good, the varnish is in great shape except for one chip just ahead of the stripper on the butt, and one very minor scratch on the one original tip. The non-original tip is fine except that it is non-original. It doesn't have the same nodal pattern, the ferrule is not a payne ferrule, but fits just fine, it doesn't have the same type of snake guides, and the guide wraps are a slightly different color than the original tip section. The guide wraps are tranlucent as well on that tip, not as the original. Both tips cast the same (a very smooth 6 weight). It comes with its ferrule plug, bag and tube. Overall a very nice Payne, even with the exceptions (more...)

Bidding has ended

Tube says Montague Redwing 8 1/2 ft, Montague Redwing, medium trout, 3 piece, 2 tip, Bamboo Fly Rod.
This rod was Montague's second from the top in their line of fly rods, right behind the Montague Manitou..

It features their top of the line Scrulock reel seat with a red Tenite spacer,

Has nickel silver sliding band and butt cap with finely threaded aluminum hardware.

It comes with their top of the line Water proof Nickel Silver ferrules.

It also has a nice swelled butt that makes for a very nice, powerful incontrol feeling when Casting.

The rod is wrapped with bright red silk tipped gold. I think the cosmetics and craftsmanship on this rod, make it one of the Nicest Quality Looking rods of it's day.
The over all condition of this rod is Very Good + To Ex- to Ex Condition on the Majority of this Beautiful Rod.

Word Redwing on the Decal is Totally Complete

Letter " M " on the name Montague is Missing

Top Fin on the Trout is Missing.

The Rest of the Decal is Complete

Total Decal Complete is at least 95 %

The decal that says "Genuine Tonkin" is about 40% gone ( Mostly on the top side of the Lettering.
The ferrules are all tight

The varnish is in very nice ( Ex Condition) shape on the mid section and both tips.

Varnish on the bottom hand section has some pelling but overall Pretty Good Overall.

All sections are full length and appear to have never been broken or repaired and are Totally Straight with no bends or Cracks that i Can See.

The wraps and tipping are in Excellent Shape and pleasantly Preserved
The rod tube is in very nice shape but it has some slight wear marks and scratches & Some masking tape that can be Removed.

The Sock is in Excellent shape & Very Clean.
This rod has been Very well taken care Of and Personally would be a great Conversation Piece to share with Others.

Described everything i could think of, if ive missed something please feel free to contact me with any Questions or Answers.

This is a vintage R.L. Winston graphite Fly Fishing Rod. The label on the rod reads THE WINSTON ROD R.L. WINSTON ROD CO. SAN FRANCISCO CALIF. I don't know when they moved there rod making to Montana, but apparently this rod was made before they moved. This is a dainty little 7 foot 4 inch #4, 1 5/8 oz. rod, the tube is also a Winston, but has the Twin Bridges Montana address, so I don't know for sure if it went with this rod, the sock is just marked R.L. Winston Rods. The condition is just amazing, looks like it was used just a few times, I would call it near mint, not counting the tube. The only 'wear' I see at all is a little dirt on the cork handle. It would be hard to find a nicer-vintage Winston rod. If I didn't have 4 fly rods I would keep this one. Check my other auctions for some other great fishing items from a few estate sales. I am listing a vintage sila flex fiberglass fly rod, a old pflueger medalist reel, and lots of other reels. High bidder to pay $13.00 for shipping, More outside the USA. I will give a break on shipping if you win more than one item.

Here is an exquisite medium trout rod which recaptures the feel of a bygone era in a highly desireable size. This rod was rescued and modernized from an earlier high end rod in minty condition except for dired out silks and a slightly damaged ferrule. The rod was completly stripped and a new grip and reel seat added, with new guides, tip-tops and a folding fly-keeper. The guide spacing is "Granger style", with snake guides at the ferrules on the mid and tips. Nine snakes + carbide ring type stripper on the fully assembeled rod. The butt ferrule set is an original and pinned to the blanks; the mid to tip ferrule set is new and as close as I could get to matching the butt ferrule. The ferrules are nickle silver. Test casting suggest a DT5 line which loads up nicely with 30' of line. Rod action is subjective, but I would describe this one as medium fast. All sections are full length and near straight (though never perfect in any older used rod). Comes with a new rod bag and will ship in a heavy guage PVC tube.

An unbelievable fly rod for serious fly fishermen only! Offered for your consideration is a 3 piece Thomas & Thomas PA909-3, 9 Wt. Fly Fishing Rod in in excellent condition...barely fished! The "PA series of Thomas & Thomas Fly Rods is their ultimate "Top of the Line" rod, normally by special order only...you won't have to wait for this one!

It is a 9'0", 9 Wt. rod and incudes the Origainal Rod Sack; Thomas & Thomas Aluminum Rod Tube; and a factory furnish extra tip (yes, 2 tips!); uplocking reel seat; and built in "Fighting Butt".

This the ultimate fishing rod for big spooky "Reds" & "Bones", Salmon, and other medium to heavy weight fish.

I've fished this rod and it is a delight to lay out 75' plus of line on a strategic mark and hook up with a big Silver Salmon or big Redfish out in the flats. It has a "full flex taper" with a medium fast action with lots of backbone and super-sensitive "feel".

This fine rod sold for just short of a "Grand" when it was new...own it now for a fraction of the cost!

ROD WITH THE ELUSIVE **TROUT DECAL** AND BAG. Without question, one of the rarest of Heddon bamboo bait rods from any era. As of this writing, it is one of only two known to exist. The other is owned by a Seattle area collector who aquired it through private sale and presently has it on loan to the Heddon Museum in Dowagiac, Michigan. Noted author Michael Sinclair, in his 1997 book "Heddon, The Rod With The Fighting Heart", discusses the rarity of the Trout Decal on pages 110 and 111. He states that the Trout Decal was a very rare feature on a few early #13 Heddon fly rods, and that it was not known if it was ever used on any other Heddon rods. We now know it was used on at least two. Sinclair goes on to state that none have ever been seen on rods that date later than 1934. The #100 Sport Special, formerly the #1, was only offered in 1933, as it was discontinued in 1934 and then reappeared as the #103 in 1935. It remains a tough one-year model to find, even with the common bass decal. The Trout Decal on this example is about 55% complete. "Heddon" can easily be read within the fish, which is obviously a Rainbow trout. Heddon's Cleo Hanley has handwritten "#100" on one flat between the decal and winding check. Rod is equipped with full agate guides & tip top, solid cork tournament grip & foregrip and red silk wraps tipped in green. I've enclosed a photo of the original listing from Heddon's 1933 catalog. Rod is in about Fine condition, showing overall wear and a few condition issues. Bamboo is extremely nice, with no splits or cracks. Both sections are the correct length. Tip section exhibits a minor set. Varnish is an overcoat that remains very nice. Rod is surely rewrapped, but done to original. All wraps are tight and complete. All guides, tip top, ferrules and winding check are excellent. Tournament cork grip shows an old repair at the very bottom, but is also solid and complete. Cork foregrip shows little wear. Reel seat with spiral-lock and attached trigger works perfectly, showing moderate+ wear and some brassing. These issues are all basically cosmetic, the rod being very solid, and in no way diminishes the rarity and importance of this model variety. Comes in a non-original two-sectioned cloth bag that's supplied for shipping and storage. Bag is excellent, with no holes or tears whatsoever. For the collector of rare bamboo, this is an opportunity that may not present itself again for some time, if ever. To be offered in true auction format, with a very modest starting bid and NO RESERVE. Buyer to pay $12.00 for bullet-proof, professional shipping via U.S. Priority Mail. Insurance is optional. Payment must be received within 10 days of auction closure. I accept PayPal, Money Orders and Cashier's Checks. Thanks very much for your time and good luck.

You can never photograph rods to show just how nice they are as is the case with this one. I acquired this rod years ago from the Estate of William A. M. Burden (google for history of this man). It has been lightly Fished and is in very nice condition. This HRH It is Stamped 13 oz for its weight class and is Wrapped in Brown, Deep Red and Gold thread. It Has High Bridge guides with Roller Tip and is close to 80" in length. Blank has a Moderate set. Guides are tight and is missing a guide ring on the 3rd guide. It Has light oxidation on roller tip that should Clean up Nicely. This is a very nice rod and would feel at home in ANY collection.

PAYNE - Abercrombie & Fitch marked fly rod
Here's a nice Payne bamboo fly rod for your consideration. It is 9 1/2 footer, 3 piece, with 2 tips and weighs approximately 7 ounces. All pieces are of equal length. The rod has an up locking aluminum reel seat with wood insert. The reel seat screw is stamped "PAYNE, REG. U.S. PAT. OFF." on one side and "Sold by ABERCROMBIE & FITCH CO., New York" on the other side. The cork handle measures about 6 1/2" long and made up of 3/8" wide rings. The rod is sound, but the varnish is tacky with fine age lines. It is also missing the hook keeper ring and possibly one or two guides may be re-wrapped as their color does not quite match (snake guide on butt section & 1st guide following on the mid-section). The rod includes a cloth bag. Unfortunately the tag is missing from the bag. Everything is housed in an aluminum tube with an Abercrombie & Fitch rod care notice glued to it. The Red notice has some damage. If you have further questions about this rod, I would be glad to try and answer them.

Item Specifics
Sport : Fishing Fishing Style: Fly Fishing
Brand : Hardy Weight: 7 wgt.
Length : 10 ft. Tackle Type: Bamboo Fly Rod

Today we have for auction a vintage 3 piece,10 foot, House of Hardy Bamboo Fly Rod. The rod is a "Palakona" model, " The Crown Houghton", in great shape. The windings are tight and the varnish is bright and the finish shines. The reel seat features a reversible butt as shown in the photos. Cork grip is solid and nicely colored, as one would hope for in a rod 50+ years old. The stripping and tip guides have an agate like interior ring to prevent line wear and contribute to precision casts. The ferrules have the original wooden plugs as shown in photos and a positive twist connection system. Green closely spaced decorative windings are in good shape. The reel seat is stamped with the serial number H9183, which dates the rod to August 1956. Also stamped on the reel seat are two royal crests, both of which read ‘By Appointment’ beneath them. The larger of the two is the crest of King George V, and the other is His Royal Highness, the Prince of Wales.

Between the two crests is stamped ‘Made by Hardy’s England’. Above the cork grip is hand lettered the words—The "Crown Hougton"--- "Palakona"---Legal Trade Mark. The proper name for this model is The "Crown Houghton", so perhaps the rod painter produced a rare misspelling. I can assure you that the rod lettering is all original in any case. The rod and aluminium case are true and straight as an arrow. Pictures do not do it justice.

The auction includes the original cloth protective sleeve with a bright Hardy cloth owner’s label and little to no fading. Also included is the original aluminum rod tube marked "Made by Hardy Bros. England"™ on both ends.

This vintage Wright & McGill Granger Victory rod number gv. 9050 appears to have never been used!! It still has the original paper rubber banded to the bottom of the rod. I believe this bamboo rod was made in the early 50's but I am not for sure. The original card board tube is not in great shape but the rod inside appears to be new. I know very little about fly rods, but will be glad to answer any and all questions. Buyer to pay a fixed $20 shipping and handling. I prefer Paypal but money order or a check after it clears will work. Good luck!!!

This is a new 6 1/2 foot bamboo fly rod based on a Cattanach 3 Wt. taper. The rod is made from oven treated blonde tonkin bamboo. The action of this rod is medium, with very delicate tips to protect fine tippets. Everything is full length and straight. The rod has six snakes on each tip section, one snake and a modern titanium oxide stripper on the butt section. The rod is wrapped in yellow, tipped black. The ferrules, fly-keeper and reel seat hardware are nickle silver. This rod has never been fished. Ferrules fit snugly and separate with a "pop". Comes with a new rod bag and new aluminum tube (which has a couple sratches).
