Cleaning

After getting your “old” stuff just give a thorough check. If you are getting a dirty reel, cleaning will be good idea. Just use a small soft type toothbrush along with dish detergent. Wash away all the dirt with the running water. In most cases this will remove most of the old dirt. But some of the old greese may remain even after the brushing.  A way to go is by dipping the brush with a carosene and brush the dirty part lightly. Again place some detergent and wash away all the dirt under running water.

A word of caution : some material used might not be suitable to be used with the carosene. It is very difficult to give suggestion here as the range of material used is enormous. As a guideline, becareful when working with plastic or rubber parts. They tend to react with most solvent. Experience with the material can be very useful.  If not sure just limit the cleaning with dish detergent.

After cleaning, leave the reel to dry at room temperature. The reel is now ready for the next step, servicing.
