Servicing

Now we are in the most challenging part. Not really. It just take time if we are not familiar with the fishing reels. If you love collecting fishing reels, repairing is as much fun as collecting the reels. It is very satisfying task.

If you are not familiar with the item, make sure to have the reels diagram available. However for most of the yesteryear fishing reels the technology used is not very complicated. The parts are very simple.

Old greese is probably the most common problem with the old reels. The greese tend to harden over time. See the attached photo how is the greese look like after many years untouch inside the Barche Brown spinfix.

First try to scrap the greese with a small screwdriver. Then the remaining greese can be removed easily by sooking the parts inside a turpentine. There are many solvent available for the job, but turpentine work fine with me. Here is the same Barche Brown after removal of the greese.

Next step is to wipe out all the dirt sticking on the reel's part. Fine sand tend to stick at the bail wire assembly. It is very important to wipe all the dirt to ensure a smooth operation of the reel.

Once clean we can proceed with the greesing of the reel. Find a light greese, the one that is not too thick. Another way of doing it is by mixing the greese with a sewing machine oil with the equal part. Just mix them together thoroughly. Using the tip of a small screw driver apply the greese to the gear teeth. Do not over-greesed as it will slow the movement of the equipment.

You can apply the other moving part of the reel with the sewing machine oil.  Just apply one or two drop of the oil at the appropriate place.   That it,  your work is done.
